Preparing and painting
an asbestos-sided house

Dear Rick and Roger:
My partner and I have questions concerning the repainting of our home which is sided with asbestos shingles, or panel siding. What products do we use and what is the best way to get this job done?
Jeff and Partner in Cleveland
Dear Jeff and Partner:
We happen to like this sort of siding on a home. Although asbestos is not used any more to make siding, they still sell fiber-board panels which are made to match the old styles and textures, which were predominatly used in the 50's and 60's. This is good to know if you plan to repair the outside of the house and need more materials before you paint.
To prepare the house we recommend a good power washing by an experienced painter that has the equipment to blast off all the grime and dirt that collects on your home during the change of seasons. If this is too pricey for you, wash the house down with a large push-broom using a mixture of water and trisodium phosphate which can be bought in dry form at any home store. After this application, spray the house down with a garden hose.
Protect plants beside the house from the detergent by covering them with plastic sheeting. If your existing paint is chipping, use the same solution with a wire brush and scrape off what is loose. After this, use a good primer, tinted with your color choice, and then the exterior house paint of your choice
applied by spraying or rolling. Paint sprayers can be rented by the day for approximately $50. We like to do things right when we paint, so remember, your finished product will only be as good as the surface you start with.
Dear Rick and Roger:
I just bought a new home that is about twenty years old. The floor plan is great and we love the space. My problem is that the house is confusing in color. Almost every room has been decorated differently, using different paints and floor coverings. What would be the best way to make this house have a good decorated flow so I am not shocked when I go from room to room?
Dear Shocked,
Shocked
We have seen this a million times. What happened in the 70's? It seems like Walt Disney showed up in these homes and threw up!
We are not sure what you want to do exactly, or what you want to spend, so here are a few ideas.
Big number one: Get some continuity in that house by changing the carpet. We are assuming that the rooms are different colors. Choose a low cut-pile carpet in a tone that will match almost everything you own. No pattern, no wild colors. Just a foundation of color to start with. Do the whole house in the same thing and it will calm everything down.
If that is not what you want, maintain continuity with the woodwork. If you plan to paint the woodwork, do it all in the same color, such as "Bright White," our favorite. Then everything will fit. If you change or order new window coverings, have some pillows made to match, or re-upholster dining room chairs to mirror the living room curtains for a co-ordinated effect.
Are all your ceiling colors the same? If they aren't, this could have a real design effect on the whole house. Co-ordinated light fixtures also give the house a complete unified feel. We hope these ideas will help.
